The annual championship weekend will include a free “Big Dance Concert Series” in Woldenberg Park, which features KISS on March 30, The Black Keys on March 31, and Jimmy Buffett on April 1. The concert series has become a part of the annual festivities, and also includes a Block Party, a Viewing Party and a JamFest. Past performers included Kings of Leon, Kenny Chesney and Taylor Swift.

Buffett is a native son of the Gulf Coast region with close ties to New Orleans. He is a huge New Orleans Saints fan, and spends a great deal of time in the area. His inclusion with this year’s NCAA championship is a natural extension of his love of the area and his own love of both music and sports.

A Gulf Coast native, Buffett held the free concert in Alabama and is credited with bringing in more than 35,000 people for the concert.

As the crowd gathered near the ocean–complete with a huge sand barrier erected by the Alabama National Guard–Buffett played a set filled with classics like “Son of a Son of a Sailor,” “Margaritaville” and “Come Monday.”

“I think all the Gulf states will benefit from this,” said Florida Gov. Charlie Crist who came to the concert. “We’re all in this together. God bless Jimmy Buffett.”

The concert was originally scheduled for July 1, but was postponed because of weather from Hurricane Alex. To make up for the postponed concert, Buffett played a surprise concert at his sister’s restaurant on June 30.

“This is a disappointment, obviously, but Jimmy Buffett is still coming to the Gulf Coast on July 11, and tickets will be honored at that time,” said Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft.

35,000 tickets to be exact! All the free Jimmy Buffett tickets were snatched up by voracious fans within 10 minutes of them going on sale. Some, naturally, made their way onto eBay and were going for over $100/ticket, causing a stir at the Mayor’s office and an investigation into the matter.

But neither the fuss nor the weather is dampening Buffett’s spirits about the show. In a statement on his website, Buffett said, “Nobody hates this more than I do but I guess, as the song says, it’s hard to reason with hurrican season. For those going anyway, thank you. My sister Lulu will take good care of you. For the rest of you, we will see you July 11th!”

The concert–”Jimmy Buffett & Friends Live from the Gulf Coast”–will also air on CMT from 8-9:30 p.m. ET on July 1.

Buffet and the other artists hope the concert will prove to the public that, despite the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, many areas in the Gulf Coast are unharmed and can still be enjoyed as a tourist destination.

“This will begin the turnaround to bring tourists back to the beach despite occasional tarballs and help save the summer season,” said Alabama Gov. Bob Riley in a statement. “Millions of Jimmy’s fans will see how clean and beautiful Gulf beaches are and many will decide to visit. This being the beginning of the important July the Fourth weekend, it could not come at a better time.”

Buffet recently said that he supported the restoration. “It’s a symbol of everything that’s great about Florida…the stadium deserves a future,” Buffet said.
